During February 2010, there was a major contest to win a copy of spells. There were 40 entries in total and it was not an easy choice as all of the entries were excellent. In the end, three finalists were passed to Aprilynne herself to choose the winner and she chose Rhea as the winner for her excellent trailer that she made for a movie version of wing’s.

Another final chapter by Kristi Clark:

Chapter twenty-six

Laurel felt herself slowly shatter with each step she took away from Tamani, each step bringing her closer to her worried mother awaiting for her in the van. Oh, how much Laurel wanted to turn and run back to Tamani once more. How she felt being held in his arms… Stop. She told herself, pushing her feet to take a shaky step. David, David, David. She chanted David’s name over and over again in her head, forcing a smile as her mother waved her down in the van. Laurel tried to picture David in her mind, but she couldn’t remember the color of eyes that he had… only the deep green ones of Tamani. “Oh honey, are you okay?” Jerking her head up to mother’s voice, she could feel herself flinch. “Yeah, mom. I’m fine.”  Her mother titled her head down at her, her eyes glancing from her to the forest behind them. “We need to get going, your father is waiting.” Laurel barely felt her mothers hand on her shoulder, barely felt her own feet towing her to the van. Each step it felt like she was leaving a piece of herself. David and her mother and her father needed her, needed her to protect them. But oh, Tamani… that kiss. Numbly, she felt herself lick her lips; they still tingled where Tamani had kissed her back. That memory of the kiss that happened moments ago made every inch of her skin warm with his touch. Stop it! She yelled at herself again, clenching her teeth together as she opened the passenger side door. “Oh! Wait, could you run inside the house and get the box we left the last time we were here?” Glancing over at her mom who was quickly searching through her pockets for the cabin door, what could she say? ‘No mom, if you make me walk any closer to the woods I’ll run back through them and forget you completely as I fall into the arms of the… of the boy I happen to love?’ Or maybe she could say, ‘Why would you make me do that after what your making me do now?’ But the more Laurel thought about that snappy question, the more guilt set in. No one was making her do this, but herself. Her parents would hate her leaving, yes, but if it made Laurel happy they would let her dance around the street nude… as long as it made her happy. Gritting her teeth together and forcing a smile, she dropped the shoes Tamani gave her and reached out to take the keys. “Sure, mom.” Her mother blinked down at her, and the guilt in Laurel’s stomach bubbled up even more. “Be right back.” She called over her shoulder, shutting the van door with her foot.

Something pulled at Laurel’s skin as she walked back to the cabin, something that forced her eyes to glance around the woods even with the protest she muttered under her breath. If only she could see his face once more, then maybe it would be okay. Maybe if she didn’t have to wait so long to come back then maybe it wouldn’t be so painful to leave him. She had already left him once, even if she couldn’t really remember it, he could. Walking up the steps quickly with the key in hand Laurel again glanced around the woods. They seemed so different now that she knew what was truly behind the blanket of trees. They seemed so more breathtaking and mysterious. Snapping her head back to the door, her hands were shaking so badly it took her a good two minutes to even get the key into the lock. The whole time, she could feel her mother’s eyes boring into her back with that worried expression that caused her forehead to crease and her mouth to go into a thin bleak line. Shoving her shoulder into the sticky old door, finally she made a step into her old home. It still smelled the same but the dusky smell almost over took the easy going scent. Slowly, so very slowly did Laurel look over every inch of the house she could see. Craning her neck back a little, she could see the steps fading into the upstairs where her bedroom door stood not even six steps away. Her parent’s room was on lower level and if she tilted her head a little to the side and squint her eyes down the hallway, the outline of the door stood out brightly. She closed her eyes suddenly, taking in the at home feeling that covered the guilt in her stomach. She stood there and let the feel of Tamani’s arms around her like they still held her tightly against his chest. Easily Laurel remembered ever inch of his sharp, cunning face. The lines of his jaws and the deep set color in his eyes. He seemed far too good to be true.

“Find it?” Her mother yelled, her voice being carried by the wind. Laurel blinked her eyes open quickly and easily found the box sitting on the stairs. “Yeah!” She called back. The box didn’t weigh much, surprisingly. Just as she turned her back a soft knocking sound sent a chill over her skin. Glancing over her shoulder to up the steps, the knocking sound came again. “Hey mom!” Poking her head out of the door with the box still in hand. “I think I forgot something in my room, I’ll be right out!” The gleam of the sun on the van windshield blocked her mother from her eyes, it didn’t stop her though. Placing the box back down on the steps, she very slowly walked up the steps she’s been up and down more in her life then she’d breathed. Wiping her hands on the tops of her jeans, the soft knocking grew in volume. It sounded, Laurel thought, like someone walking around. The thought caused her to panic and at the same time… speed her steps up just a tad. Pressing her ear against the door, she could easily point out a hushed whisper muttering under their breath. “Stupid, stupid.” The voice muttered, disgusted with himself. Laurel pressed her ear against the door harder trying to pinpoint everything going on. “Why didn’t you try harder?” The voice whispered to himself. She knew the voice, knew the voice so well every bad thought that creased her mind vanished. “Why didn’t you go after her stupid Tamani!” If neither her nor Tamani where in this position she would have laughed. She didn’t though. A frown picked at the corners of her lips and she could feel guilt eat away at her yet again. Should I open the door? The thought ran over her head so quickly in such a short amount of time she didn’t even notice the banging at first. “I lost her again.” Tam sobbed, hitting the wall on the far side of her bedroom so loudly Laurels eyes watered with each loud bang. Tears blurred her vision at the sound in his voice, burned her mind with a sound she never, ever wanted to hear again. The pain and sadness. “How could she? She knows… she knows I love her…” Closing her eyes against the tears, she pictured what Tamani looked like. His dark hair with its green roots glistening against his tan skin and green eyes. A thud caused Laurel to bite down on her lip, tears falling down Tamani’s eyes in her mind and yet he still looked like the angel she knew he really was.

The door was cool against her forehead when she pressed it against the wood, hands tightening on each side of her at the sobs escaping Tamani’s lips. The very lips that still burned against Laurels and she knew they would continue to tingle with his taste until the end of her days. David could kiss her millions of times and it wouldn’t even be a portion of Tamani’s warmth. Touching her lips with one of her hands, tears covered her pale face quickly. Even if David couldn’t even measure to Tamani in anyway shape or form, she has to protect her family. There is hope for us, she whispered in her mind wishing Tamani could hear her thoughts. I’ll come back for you when I know everything is safe for my parents. The sobs on the other side of the door slowed just for a second. Laurel blinked her burning teary eyes open and pressed her lips against the wood. She wished it were Tamani’s warm lips that kissed back but she wouldn’t be able to fill them again until the second she could come and live in her real world with him. I’ll be back as soon as I can, she thought forcefully. Until then I’ll cry every night wishing I were with you and in your arms and I will think of you very day until then. I will never leave you again after this, so please Tam… The name even in her mind caused her eyes to burn with more tears. Please Tam be strong, be strong until I can come back to you and hold you and tell you everything will be okay. Pulling her head back from the door, the sobs were stopped but the tears still burned Laurel’s cheeks. Brushing her fingers over the wood she couldn’t help but to kiss the door once more. “I love you, Tamani. So very much.” Laurel whispered so softly, so gently that she could barely hear it. Taking a step from the door, she slowly turned on her heels. The sounds of him getting up caused her to take the steps down two at a time, grabbing the box so quickly it almost fell to the ground. She couldn’t see him, not until she could stay here. His image forever will burn behind her eyelids, but if she saw him right now… she would never go.

Shutting the door with one hand, her eyes caught a movement on the top of the stairs. Her bedroom door opened, sending the bright light of the sun over every inch of the hallway. Just as Laurel took a step back, Tamani stepped out of the room with his angel face glowing. Even from here she could see the red marks of fallen tears down his cheeks. Taking a deep breath, she found his eyes after looking over every inch of his face only to see his eyes glued to hers. A small smile turned at the corners of his lips, brightening his eyes up so much that it took the breath right out of Laurels mouth. Watching closely as his lips formed silent words, she couldn’t help herself but to smile back. “I love you too” he mouthed as Laurel took another step back. Quickly he looked away, over to the van where her mother sat; and quickly he looked back into Laurel’s eyes. Tilting his head into a small nod, she knew what it meant. ‘I’ll be okay’, his eyes said as he kissed his hand and blew her a kiss. The action sent butterflies in her stomach and his warmth to seep through her skin even with the distance. With a final smile Tamani turned back into her bedroom and shut the door, blacking out the hallway from her eyes. The sound of the horn beeping caused her to whip her head to look at her awaiting mother. Worry still etched over her face making Laurel slowly smile. As she walked down the steps with the box in her hands and keys lying on top of it, she could feel eyes watch her. Quickly she glanced to her right, only to smile softly and look back to her mother. His green eyes so filled with a warmth and calmness it made Laurel think he could really read her mind and understand how much she truly did love him. “Did you get what you needed out of your room?” Laurel’s mother asked as soon as she opened the door and pulled herself in with the box in her lap. Looking over at her mother, her lips twisted into a bright grin. “I did.” Laurel whispered, turning her head back to the forest as her mother backed out of the driveway. Tamani stood there with one of his hands waving away to her. ‘I’ll be back as soon as I can.’ Laurel mouthed to him, seeing the bright gleam of happiness shin in his green eyes. And just as she blinked, he was gone. Each second as Laurel’s mother backed out of their driveway, she could feel small pieces of herself falling to the ground. But the image of the smiling… happy Tamani caused the itching pain that once was in her stomach to fade away. She knew he would be strong and be waiting for her with open arms as soon as she got back. The time that it took though, Laurel thought sadly, was still an unanswered question. As soon as I can, she thought back to herself closing her eyes. The image of Tamani dancing behind her closed eyelids as she drifted into a peaceful sleep hearing his deep voice whisper to her that he loves her too as he planted kiss after kiss onto her smiling lips.

The following entries were also considered excellent, but didn’t quite make the cut I’m afraid:

My entry for the spells contest

Laurel woke up to the soft light of dawn seeping into her room. The sky was a delicate orange, like a perfectly ripened peach, and the feathery clouds that were dotted across the sky were coloured a soft rose. She rolled on to her side, and softly let out a content sigh. Her thoughts drifted to David.
It was the last day of December, and she and her-it felt odd to think it to herself, even though it had been around two months since they’d finally gotten together- boyfriend had both been busy with their families the past few days with Christmas. They hadn’t seen each other much, but today they were meeting up for lunch. She smiled at the thought. Laurel had a surprise for him. She hadn’t had a chance to give David his Christmas present yet, which she had spent a long time choosing in the store.
She couldn’t wait.
Laurel got up and made her way to the kitchen. Her Mom was making a fruit salad, with kiwi and strawberries, and melon. The smell lit up a party in Laurel’s nose, and she breathed in greedily.
“Morning Laurel,” her Mom looked up, and gave her a warm smile.
Though it had been around two months since Laurel had told her parents her true identity as a faerie, the most advanced species of plant in the world, just having shown up at the hospital with a diamond and a potion which had saved her father’s life with only a few drops, covered in mud after a troll had tried to murder her and David(though her mother didn’t know that part), Laurel’s mother had barely stopped smiling at Laurel since.
“Morning Mom.” She went over and squeezed her Mom lightly, before saying,”Smells good. What about you and Dad?”
“When your Dad actually gets out of bed-” her Mum smiled fondly,”He and I are having Pancakes. I thought you’d prefer fruit.”
Now her Mom knew she was a faerie, she always kept lots of fruit and veggies, now she understood why Laurel didn’t eat dairy or meat.
“Thanks Mum. David’s taking me out for lunch later, I don’t know how long we’ll be gone but I’ll keep my cellphone in case you need me. I think he’s planning on spending the day out actually.”
“That’s fine.”
Laurel ate her breakfast quickly, then went back to her room and took a shower. When she was back in her room, wrapped in a soft white towel, she turned her back to the mirror and peered over her shoulder at the faint white line still left on her back from when she had blossomed in the fall.
She missed it a little now. She would blossom again next fall, of course, but that seemed a long time away now. It had been the first in the series of events that had led her to her realization she was a faerie, which had also brought her and David together. And had also brought her to Tamani….Laurel stopped her thoughts there. She was going to spend the day with David. David, her amazing boyfriend, who was extremely important to her.

Laurel looked up as she heard the tyres of David’s car pull up against the kerb outside her house.
She had been sitting in the garden strumming her guitar softly, but now she got up and walked over to where David stood, and leant against the garden fence.
“Hi. How are you?” he asked her.
“I’m alright. What about you?”
“Same as usual. You ready to go?”
“Yeah, let me just go get something first.”
She ran inside, grabbed the little box and a jacket, wrapped the box inside it, and walked outside again.
“Okay, ready. Do I get to know where we’re going now?”Laurel wondered.
David grinned.”No.”

“Alright, now, you can look.” Laurel heard David say. She couldn’t see him, he had kept her blindfolded the entire drive. They’d had lunch earlier, at a nice restaurant in Crescent city, nowhere to serious though. Then they’d hung out for a bit in the local park, and afterwards got in the car and drove wherever they were now. David had led her up what felt like a large hill, and made her sit on the ground, facing somewhere.
Gently,Laurel felt David remove the dark piece of material covering her light green eyes.
“Wow,” Laurel breathed.
They were standing at the top of a large hill, surrounded by trees almost in bloom, looking down at Crescent City. Laurel could see the headlights of cars just switching on in the early sunset. The sky was a faint pink, gently turning the fluffy white clouds to candyfloss, amidst the streaks of purple and orange. It was breathtaking.
Laurel looked up at David, her eyes shining. His bright blue ones were fixed on her face, watching her reaction with a slight smile. His skin had an olive tone, and his wavy light brown hair fell in his eyes slightly as he looked at her.
“You like it?”
“It’s amazing.”
He brushed a strand of her soft blond hair out of her face. “I know.” She wasn’t sure if he was talking about the sunset or not.
She looked down, embarrassed.
“Has anything happened? You seem worried.” David asked seriously.
“No. It’s the lack of things happening that’s got me worried to be honest,” Laurel sighed,” Barnes escaped around two months ago. I don’t believe he just gave up.”
“Neither do I. Don’t worry, Laurel. We won’t let anything happen to you.” He put his arms around her, and she leaned in the him, breathing in the smell of his clean shirt.
Laurel knew when David said ‘we’ he meant Tamani and the faeries aswell. A thrill went through her as she thought Tamani’s name. Though she and David were together now, she still felt an extreme tangle of emotions for the one who had kept her safe, and watched over her all these years, had even gotten shot by Barnes in October, to protect her. He was the one who had told her what she was, a faerie, the most advanced species of plant in the world.
Laurel shook these thoughts from her head. She’d save those for another time. Instead she focused on how David had helped her get through when she had first bloomed, confused and scared, how he’d been a shoulder to cry on when her father had gotten sick, and been her friend when she had first started high school when she moved to crescent city.
All these thoughts were in her mind as she whispered,”It’s not me I’m worried for. You, Mum and Dad…” her voice trailed off into the gathering darkness, and she leaned back to look up into his face.
“There’s faerie’s patrolling your house non-stop, according to you. Your parents are well guarded. And don’t worry about me,” he grinned, trying to lighten the mood,”I have a lucky charm.”
She just looked puzzled.
“You, Laurel,”David said, as if it was obvious.
“Me?”
“Your a faerie! How many guys an say, “My girlfriend is a faerie” ?” His voice was proud as he said it.
“I’m the only person you can ever say that to though,” Laurel pointed out.
David just shrugged.
“It doesn’t matter. I know, and I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. You really are amazing Laurel.”
“I’m a plant. I grow a flower out of my back every fall.”
“I think your bloom is pretty,”He smiled,”Like wings.”
Laurel laughed at that, remembering the costume dance at school of October, where he had been a faerie and her bloom had been her wings, which David had ‘made for her’.
David carried on smiling, his thoughts clearly on the same thing.“But that’s not the reason I love you. I don’t love you because your a faerie, or because your the prettiest girl at Del Norte High-” Laurel laughed-”Though that could be a part of it..”He added as an afterthought. ”I love you for you. Your personality, how awesome you sound when you sing and play your guitar, how nice you are, gave me every reason to fall head over heels for you. Ever since the first day I met you, I wanted to know you better. Now I have, and I wouldn’t change that for anything.” His bright blue eyes were soft, and fixed on her face.
It was the first time he’d said he loved her, though Laurel wasn’t sure if he realized it.
Laurel didn’t have a clue what to say, so she just smiled, and tried to put as much feeling into that smile as possible. David seemed to see that, and appreciate it.
He took her hand, and rubbed it gently with his thumb.
“Of course, I know the only reason you like me is because of my excellence at bio.” David joked.
Laurel laughed. “Do you seriously think I would have shown my blossom to, and confided in, some random guy from school just because he was good at bio?”
“Hmmmm.” He pretended to think about it for a moment, so she shoved his shoulder lightly.
He cleared his throat, before saying,”I have something for you.”
He reached into his jacket pocket, and brought out a small box.
For one stupid moment she thought he was going to propose.
Then she realized that the box was a bit flatter, and longer than that would need to be, before he took the lid off, and the last rays of sun glinted off a necklace nestled into the fabric.
Hung on a thin silver chain was a little figure, with a tiny_____ face and flowing blonde hair. It’s arms were held slightly aloft, like a ballerina, graceful in stillness, and behind a light pink dress were delicate pale blue wings that shimmered ever so slightly. It was exquisite.
“It’s wonderful,” Laurel whispered.
“It reminded me of you.”
David gently lifted it out of the box, and undid the chain. He then fastened the tiny figure about her neck, Laurel’s skin tingling wherever his brushed hers. It wasn’t heavy.
David looked at her for a moment, a faint smile playing around the edge of his lips. “You look great.”
He smiled properly now.
“Thank you. For the necklace aswell. I love it.” She returned his smile happily.
“It’s alright. It was your Christmas present.” He shrugged.
“Speaking of Christmas presents. Your turn.” She reached into her pocket and brought out the little box she had grabbed earlier. “This is for you.”
She handed it to him. David opened it, and she watched the look of surprise flash across his face as he saw the silver watch. She held out her hand for it, and he handed it to her. Then she reached for his hand. It was warm, and felt nice in hers. Then she fastened the watch around his wrist. It was just the right size.
“It’s a replacement for the one that broke when Barnes….had us dumped in the river.”
He hugged her for a long moment. “Thank you.”
When they broke apart, he kept one arm around her shoulders.
They both looked up at the moon in the twilight sky.
They sat like that for a long time, not really saying much, listening to the quiet, and watching the occasional cars driving through Crescent City in the night, probably heading home. Laurel watched as one car turned off the city road, and onto a country lane somewhere near the base of the hill.
Laurel heard a crack of a twig somewhere to her right, in the midst of a group of trees and bushes, making her jump.
“Probably just some animal,” David said reassuringly, but she continued to search for the source of the sound with her eyes. After a while she still couldn’t see anything, and decided David was probably right, and relaxed. She leaned back into David.
A little while later, Laurel was feeling drowsy, and heard an owl hoot from the clump of trees she’d been watching before. She turned to look, curious to see it. Suddenly some movement caught her attention. From between the trees, Laurel could see a weird, oddly-shaped moon shadow. She stared at it for a minute or two, before the fact that it was a head and shoulders broke through her calm..
She almost screamed.
Somehow, maybe from the shock, her face managed to keep the same expression. Careful not to react, casually she turned her head facing away from the shadow, fighting all her instincts to not take her eyes off it, and run, so that her lips were next to David’s ear.
“Don’t react,” Laurel breathed as quietly as possible.
He didn’t. For a moment she thought he hadn’t heard her, but he squeezed her fingers lightly, and she knew he was listening.
“This is going to sound crazy, but we need to run. To the car. Now. No questions.”
David quietly got up, and pulled Laurel with him. He took hold of her hand, and then without any warning, he ran.

Laurel gave in to her instincts, in to the urge to run away from that all too familiar shadow. It had haunted her dreams for the past two months. It was the shadow of Mr Barnes.
She didn’t think, didn’t look behind her. She just ran with David as fast as her legs would carry her.
They reached the car. Laurel jumped in the passenger seat, David simultaneously sliding into the drivers. He started the car, and then they were moving.
Laurel looked behind her now. Her eyes raked the shadows, the hill, the bushes. Everywhere.
For a second she thought she saw a dark shape flitting across the hillside, but she blinked, and it was gone. In a moment, she wasn’t sure if she’d seen anything at all. She couldn’t be sure.

David kept his eyes on the road as he said,” Are you going to tell me what the heck that was about?”
They had been driving for five minutes or so, and Laurel hadn’t stopped staring out the back window of the car ever since they starting moving, expecting to see a dark bulky shadow jumping Out at them any second.
She gulped, and tried to calm herself.
“The twig. That we heard snap. It wasn’t an animal.” Laurel shuddered. “It was Barnes.”
She heard David’s sharp intake of breath.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded, then realized he was looking at the road, and said, “Yeah.”
But then her certainty began to leak away, like trying to cup water in your hands.
Maybe…maybe it hadn’t been Barnes’ shadow after all. Maybe it had been some kind of oddly shaped bush or tree.
Why would he have been that close, and not tried to finish the job he had started in October?
It was now her who owned the land he had almost taken hold of those short months ago.
The land that was important to all the faeries. The land that held the gate to Avalon, the faerie realm.
The trolls wanted it so bad, they’d tried to kill her, and David, and Tamani. She was sure he would’ve tried to kill a lot more faeries too, if he’d had the chance.
Why would he just leave her? Barnes was strong, immensely so. Al trolls were.
“What did you see?” David broke into her reverie.
“His shadow. From the moon. I. . .I recognised it. His shoulders are kind of disproportioned. . .”
“Your sure it wasn’t a tree or something?”
“I don’t think so. .”
“Do you think he’s been following you?”
Laurel’s eyes widened as she considered this possibility.
“I hadn’t thought of that.”
They drove on in silence for a little while.
David’s thought made sense. It would explain all the weeks of nothing.
He could have been watching her, lying low, and seeing what she did. . .
Before, Laurel had been feeling tired. Now she was wide awake and jumpy.
Her and David had been relaxed, peaceful even, when mere metres away there might have been a dangerous troll.
Absent-mindedly, Laurel’s hand travelled up to her collar, brushing the necklace given to her by David, and pulling from under her shirt a second chain, this one with a small ring with a tiny crystal flower on. It was a seedling ring. They were given to faerie babies when they were born. Usually, they grew with the faerie, but Laurel had given hers to Tamani before she had been placed with her adopted human parents, though she didn’t remember that part.
Tamani had give it back to her all these years later.
She had promised to think of a little more of him whenever she wore it.
As she touched it now, she knew what she had to do. She touched it and memories of Tamani flooded her mind.
She touched it and she knew that she had to go see him.
It was late when they arrived at Laurel’s house.
Laurel looked around at the slightest sound as she got out of David’s car, only to find that it was a bird, or the wind rustling the leaves.
“Tonight didn’t go exactly the way I’d planned. The end, anyway.” David had stopped walking, and he turned to face her,” But it was nice while it lasted. Thank you for the watch.,”he glanced down at it as he spoke.,”You didn’t have to get me anything.”
“Neither did you.”
He smiled, and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear.
She could see the moon reflected in his bright blue eyes.
Then he leaned down and kissed her lightly.
Suddenly nothing mattered.
Her worries about Barnes, and school, just disappeared. Nothing mattered in that moment where their lips met.
Suddenly there was loud noises all around them. Cracks and bangs filling the silent night.
They broke apart, and stared into the sky, David’s arms wrapped around Laurel.
Fireworks were going off everywhere, in all different colours, blue, pink, green, gold. Sparkling in the dark, night sky.
David looked at the watch Laurel had given him, surprised. “Midnight,” he said. “ Happy new year.”

End of Chapter One

Another Wings Chapter by Bobbie:

Extra Chapter to Wings

On Monday Laurel met David at his house.
“What’s your excuse for not being at school on Thursday and Friday?” Laurel asked him.
“I had to take care of my grandmother.” David smiled “Yours is more reasonable.”
“We’re lucky that Tamani is alive and that he helped.” Her thoughts where at the memory of Tamani, just the day before.
“Chelsea called me yesterday. She was worried when we where both gone for two days and she heard about your dad.”
“Oh,” Laurel replied lifelessly.
“Are you okay? You’ve been acting really spaced since you went to see Tamani.” David inquired.
By that time they were at school. Laurel didn’t want to answer that question.
“Yeah I’m fine” she replied as she ducked into her first class leaving David in the hallway. But all day she couldn’t help her thoughts drifting back to the memory of Tam and her in the forest. Would she really have stayed if she didn’t have to take care of her parents? Laurel was so caught up in her thoughts she didn’t even hear her English teacher call her name.
“Laurel!” Chelsea whispered.
“Sorry, could you repeat the question?” Laurel stuttered and blushed. But it was too late; her teacher gave her a disapproving look and moved on. The rest of the day passed uneventful.
After Spanish Laurel ran into David,
“What happened with Tamani?” David demanded, not taking ‘nothing’ for an answer.
“I just told him that I wouldn’t be able to see him for a while.”
“See him?” David’s face was shocked.
“Not like that,” Boys. Laurel thought to herself.
David gave her one last worried look and headed to his house.
“David!” Laurel yelled after him, “Really, I’m okay. I’m just,” she hesitated, “really tired.” Laurel finished lamely. She waited to see if David had bought her lie.
“Alright, if you say so.”
Laurel let out her breath in relief and waved good-bye.
When she got to her house she opened the door to find her mom making bread. Just like she had been on the first day of school. Laurel dropped her backpack and headed for her room.
“Wait a minute,” Her mom stopped her, “Where is the ‘Hi mom how was your day’?”
“Sorry,” Laurel replied, “How was your day?”
“It was good. Thanks for asking.” Her mom smiled.
“How was dad’s first day back?” Laurel asked.
“It was nice to have him back at work. We really owe your faerie friends.”
“You’re paying them back by giving me the land.” Laurel countered.
“Any way, David called he sounded really worried about you, is there some faerie thing that your not allowed to tell me?” Her mom went on.
“No,” Laurel laughed and went to her room. She looked into her mirror and turned around to look at the scar on her back. She knew that if a troll came she would have to protect her parents but she didn’t know how. Jamison hadn’t really told her how to get a troll away from humans.
But Laurel couldn’t help thinking about living with Tam in Avalon. Just the idea was so magical. It made her feel like it did when Tamani was with her in the forest. It was hard to turn the offer down the other day but Laurel knew what she had to do.
Laurel! Get a hold of your self! Tamani is not an option. Laurel mentally scolded herself. But she couldn’t help herself. She eventually fell asleep thinking about Tamani.
The next morning was no better then the last. But she put on her usual jeans and tank top. But when she was putting on her faerie necklace she noticed something odd. The little ring was just a little bit bigger. Laurel thought it was odd. How could it have gotten bigger? But she put that thought aside. She had biology quiz that day and after two hours of studying it over with David she still wasn’t sure she was ready.
The rest of the week breezed by. Laurel decided to help her dad out in the bookstore. When she walked in Maddie greeted her warmly and told her that she had to unpack and shelve and new couple of box loads of books. She started at the three stacks of boxes.
As she opened the third boxes of books she noticed something strange. There was only one book of a deep red cover. The title was Gateway to Avalon and All it’s Treasures. By J. Barnes.

Why Wings Is Special To Me
By Emily Brown

One of the reasons Wings is special to me is because before I read the this book, whenever someone said the word ‘faery’ I always imagined a tiny creature in a pink dress with a set of sparkly wings. When I read this book it changed the meaning of this word to me. It made me believe in the magical world this book described to me. It made me feel tension and terror, love and excitement. It absorbed me for hours because I couldn’t put the book down without finding out what happened next. It made me believe in faeries.

Aprilynne Pike described a different world to me so vividly that I was actually in it, watching these events happen, even though I was only reading ink off sheets of paper. The things she wrote might not be real, the magic in the book might not exist, but the fact that the book could absorb me like that is magic in itself. It takes a very talented person to crate such a wonderful world.

When you read this book, you escape into someone else’s life. You can forget all our worries and pretend to be somewhere else, to be someone else. When you read a book you escape into a different world entirely, a world that is there whenever you want, wherever you want it.

Wing is a true masterpiece that can make people feel emotions for the people in the book. This book can make you cry, laugh, or shield your eyes in terror. wings is truly one of a kind and I can’t wait to see how this story unfolds.

WINGS
And why it’s important to me.
By Molly Fabricatore
Wings is important to me. Why? Well, let me tell you! Wings is the first faery book that I’ve read (other than Thumbelina that I read when I was six). I have since become a huge fan of faery books. Actually, I think faeries are my favorite mythical creature. I like all kinds of faery books. I’ve read several and even though they’re all different, I still am fascinated. That’s probably why I keep finding them so interesting. So many authors have taken one creature and made many different kinds and stories. They tend to have many similarities that are based in the folklore and that is why I like them so much!
Another reason it’s so special to me is because it was given to me by one of my friends for my seventeenth birthday (She clearly knows me; books are the perfect gift for me). I was a little wary because I wasn’t entirely sure about faeries and how I’d feel about a story about them. I’ll admit I was a little ignorant.
So when I finally read it, I read it all in one day. I could not put it down. It was so captivating. And as I was reading I was messaging the friend that gave me the book and telling her how much I liked it and talking about what was happening because she had read it as well. That’s why she knew I’d like the book! When I did finish it, I immediate looked up Aprilynne Pike to find her website and see if there would be a sequel. I was so excited that there was not only a sequel but four more books! And I told my friend and we talked about how excited we were.
I am eagerly awaiting Spells. As soon as I found out when it was coming out I told my friend; as soon as I found out the title and then later the cover I sent her links. I am so incredibly excited! I was also happy to find out the third book is called Enchantments. I think the titles of the Wings books are fantastic! I even have a countdown on my desktop! 74 days and counting!
Wings is a really important book to me and I’d LOVE to win an ARC of Spells

A blurb from Emily:

I wrote an advertisement thing. maybe a little like a jacket copy. so
here it is:

Laurel has a secret. A big secret. It started with just a small
blemish, a little pimple. Then it grew, and grew, until it was just
too much. David knew there was something wrong, but does Laurel want
to risk exposure by telling him? Now there is Tamani, he understands
everything Laurel is going through. He explains so much, even makes
Laurel feel more normal. When tragedy strikes in Laurel’s home David
is there for her with a shoulder to cry on, but to understand the
issue, Laurel needs Tamani.

Wings is the first book in a series of love, friendship, and
fairytale. Faeries, Trolls, and humans all mix together in this superb
love story with an interesting twist. It’s a book you just cannot put
down! Your emotions will be going crazy, like a train off track, as
you read about Larel’s dangerous adventures, her heart, and her
family

Why Katie Loves Wings:

Okay I’m going to start with I LOVE WINGS, I didn’t like reading much before I read it but it opened my eyes. I know lots of people will say please please please and beg to win but I know you will be sick of the word please so I’m just going to prove to you that I love wings and I deserve a signed copy of spells. As I said before I did not read much until I read ( and loved) wings. I think Aprilynne is an AMAZING writer and I hope one day I can have as much imagination as she does. When the movie comes out I don’t think Miley should play the main roll she just does not suit it, someone like Taylor Swift would be much better (but you properly can do anything about that). Another reason I think I should receive the copy of spells is that I am really exited about the competition about Tamini and David. Most of the way through the book I liked David better because he was so caring and was always there when she needed someone (like when her dad was sick), but then I read the last chapter when Tamini made his speech about always loving her and always looking out for her it made me cry and I loved him more. As soon as I finished the book (I read it in 2 days) I jumped onto my computer and wanted to know if there was going to be a second book, when I saw there was going to be one I was so exited and I could not wait. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I really hope you understand why I want spells as soon as possible.

A poem by CicciSwe:

A girl so pale
With skin white
She’s differnent from us
She’s not from this world

She discovers a secret
well hidden from our eyes
It’s a part of her past,
it’s a part of her future,
it’s a part of her soul,
it’s a part of her

She discovers her past
she discovers love
she’s pulled into a war
and she’s pulled into love
war can hurt
love can hurt
war can confuse
love can confuse
In the war she’s not alone,
she’s got help there
but when it comes to love
all she can do
is rellay on herself

Another Chapter by Mie:

I wonder if i’ll be able to protect the ones i love.
Laurel? i heard a annoyed voice say.
i turned my head to see Chelsey looking at me.
what? i asked.
didnt you hear what i just said? her voice sounded more annoyed.
umm.
she let out a sigh.
honestly Laurel, I can’t have one conversation without you stairing into space.
I dont stair into space. i mumbeld.
whatever,so as i was saying what are you doing this summer?
i looked downwhen i thought of that question, the only word i heard was summer.
it was the last day of school and Chelsey and I were in the hallway by my locker.
Summer i thought when kids didnt have school and mostly did whatever they wanted. while I sit by the stream of were i live or as did live. I its been six months since the incedent, and yet it only felt like it was yesterday.when David and i had been caught by the troll Jerimiha Barnes and his stinky troll friends and had decided that they should drown us. but only he couldnt because of me, i have recently figured out that im no human at all but instead somthing humans have never seemed to get the story right. im a faeire or as i say im a fall faeire, which means i was born in the fall. after Jerimiha Banes had ran away ive been choosen to be the protecter of my parents and the ones that I love.
i looked up to see her waiting for answer.
nothing really i guess, i said hoping that would be the final thing i had to say about the subject.
she looked at my with shock. how can you not do anything for summer?
everyone always has somthing to do.
i was about to protest until i heard a fimiler voice.
hey ladies…
i turned around to see David coming towards us. he was wearing navy blue jeans and a tight red shirt that clung around his body that made him look like he had more muclses.
i smiled as he approched. hey chelsey and I said at the same time.
David looked at me and smiled as he slid his fingers into mine, giving me an shock going up my spine.
so what is the conversation im walking into? he asked teasnly.
well if you must know Chesley said. Laurel said she’s doing nothing for summer vacation.
He chuckled and said not everyone has the same plans as you do.
she looked at him and said well then i guess i will leave you to alone then. she walks away with a smile on her face knowing he was only joking.
then David turned to me. your not going to tell me we are not doing anything this summer?
i looked at him with a smile and asked we?
he smiled yeah i mean if you want to.
I squezed his hand and said we are. as the last bell rang of school everyone ran out of school cheering.
Even i was. no more staying indoors to learn, not being able to breath in the freash air. with that in my mind i breathed in only to smell Davids colonge.
He took my hand and headed for his car. he smiled as he stoped at my house and opened to door for me as i got out.
i opened to door and right there was my mother smiling.
Hey, guys. how was your last day of school?
fine, i said.
only fine? she looked at me skepticly.
i nodded. well that seems kind of boring.
there was silence in the room then.
well, finally i said David and i are going upstairs.
ok honey.
As Daivd and i got upstairs to my room. he turned me around and leaned in only to kiss me.
i closed my eyes and finily kissed him back, only him wanting more. he pressed his lips more eagrally to mine.
but then he lost his breath and had to step back.
i couldnt help but laugh.
he looked at me and asked. what so funny?
i stoped and replied nothing.
hmm well then. what shall we do your faeireness as he bowed.
this time i laughed harder as i tryed to stop he took my body and layed it with him on my bed.
there was silence again which i never flet comfertable with.
this time he broke the silence, well i was thinking that maybe since your not doing anything this summer that maybe you could come with my mom and i at the lake house.
really? i asked.
yeah i mean its no forest but there is alot of stuff there and. interpupted this time.
i would love to go with you. i said happily.
really? he asked with exitment.
yeah i would. i was so happy he asked i didnt want to be without him this whole summer.
he smiled and said great. but then he looked at the time. he jolted up right away and said im sorry but i got to go im late for work.
it’s ok ill talk to you later. ok?
yes he said with a smile amd kissed my forhead and left.
i smiled and layed in my bed which flet like minutes not hours.
then i heard my mother call my name.
yeah?
dinner.
i got up and ran downstairs and sat in the chair, with my father right next to me.
hey kido, he said.
hey.
so how was school? he asked
with the same responce i said fine.
Fine?
yeah
oh come on honey there has to be somthing more to that.
well then i rememberd Chesley and i talk in the hallway.
well Chesley and i talked and asked what we were doing this summer.
then i remeberd what David said with the lake house but then my father said.
Laurel honey can i tell you somthing?
looked up at him and replided sure.
well your mother and i were talking the other day and well we decided where we were going to go for summer.
Well i said
then my father interupted me and said. we are going to spend the summer at our old house.
i payed attention after that. What?
we are my mother and father said looking at me happily.
why are we going to do that for?
so we can clean up and stay there for summer.
but david invited me to go the there lake house for summer i said.
oh my mother said well i guess you can do that to if you dont wanna hang out with use this summer she said with a pouty lip.
mom dont do that i said.
she still kept doing that.
oh ok fine ill go with you guys.
then my mother smiled good because where leaving tomorrow.
then my whole changed no david no Chesley and know there is only one thing thats Chesley was right about there is always something to do during summer,
