The Book
Wings is a book written by Aprilynne Pike, a new author. The book is the first of a four part series, and was released on May the 5th 2009.
Wings is about a fifteen year old girl called Laurel who lives in her family home next to Orick in California, just a short distance away from the Redwood National Parks. Here in California, she was homeschooled by her parents, and did not really leave the house much. To add to this, her parents are also quite wacky hippies.
Laurel then leaves this strange situation to head to Crescent City, to attend a public school. She settles in well considering how different it is to how she has grown up, and becomes good friends with a boy named David.
Laurel discovers that she is not normal, and has “wings”. She finds that she can talk to David about these “wings”, but finds it hard to confront her parents. She knows that when she was young she was an abandoned child, being left on the front door of her parents house.
Laurel takes a trip back home to the countryside and meets someone very special called Tamani. Tamani is also a faerie and answers many of the questions that she has been harboring. According to Tamani, Laurel was sent to earth to her parent’s house in order to complete a mission. That mission was to inherit the land once her parents pass away, as the land is very special to the faerie people, it is the gate to their homeland, Avalon.
After hearing this information, Laurel must find her new place in the world, and save Avalon from possible destruction!

The author
Aprilynne Pike was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, but her childhood home became Phoenix in Arizona. She spent her early years here, until she moved to Driggs in Idaho as a teenager. She was very active in the school community, and participated in several extracurricular activites. Being both clever and athletic, she received both an Academic Foundation scholarship and a cross-country running scholarship for the Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston. She received her BA (Bachelor of Arts) in merely three years.
She met her husband-to-be, Kenneth Pike, while he was serving the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It was a case of love-at-first-sight, fit for the books she would herself write years later. Less than two years later, they were married. Always a hard worker, Aprilynne would work as the assistant manager of a restaurant to help support Kenneth in his studies of philosophy. Kenneth and Aprilynne now live in Arizona, and have three children together.
From an early age, Aprilynne was always an imaginative child. Her talent for writing fairy stories manifested itself early on, but still it was hard to find a publisher for her books. She had tried her hand at three different novels, all unpublished, before Wings was written. Keeping the family economy up was tough, and being qualified as a childbirth educator, Aprilynne was just about considering putting her writing career on the shelf and pursuing a career of helping budding mothers, when her agent Jodi Reamer rang: Wings had awoken interset with publisher HarperCollins. Just as it seemed she would have to put her dream on the shelf, Wings was published, and became a New York Times #1 bestseller. Wings is now just book one out of four, and we dare bet that this will not be the last we see of author Aprilynne Pike.
